When Rahul Gandhi announced that he would step down as Congress chief in the aftermath of the devastating Lok Sabha election results under his leadership, many within his own party thought they would be able to convince him and there will be no crisis. Mr Gandhi refused, and thus began the over two-month search for a successor. The brief was simple: get a non-Gandhi chief for the Congress.
