The busy, bustling streets of Jharia in Jharkhand seem no different from the rest of small town India. But travel a little way out, and a profusion of little fires erupting from the ground tell a different tale. Beneath Jharia, in the coal-fields of Jharkhand, an inferno rages. Seams of self-igniting coal threaten life, property and livelihoods. But Jharia has not taken kindly to a proposed plan of relocation.
