Part-theatre, part-dance, part-social satire – tamasha, Maharashtra’s best-known folk spectacle, is an art form in decline. Amid the women who traditionally perform this rustic dance-drama are a group of men hoping to revive interest and creat a brave new world of tamasha. They have day jobs as a waiter, courier and student. At night, they don the finery of a tamasha dancer – the nine-yard sari, chunky jewellery and exaggerated make-up.
