The process to appoint the Election Commission of India has come under the scrutiny of a Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, which is hearing a clutch of petitions on the issue. Over the last couple of days, the bench has made several scathing observations and asked the government some tough questions. The Supreme Court has asked to see files related to the recent appointment of Arun Goel as the Election Commissioner, saying it wants to know if there was any "hanky panky" as he was only recently given voluntary retirement from service.
