Syrian rebel fighters, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have made significant advances southward after capturing much of Aleppo, Syria's largest city. This marks one of the most serious challenges to President Bashar al-Assad's government since the civil war began in 2011. The offensive forced government forces, backed by Russia and Iran, to withdraw from key areas. The rebels also claimed territory previously held by U.S.-backed Kurdish forces around Aleppo. Insurgents shared images and videos of their gains, highlighting their strengthened control over military installations and surrounding regions.
