Tamil Nadu Celebrates Harvest Festival Pongal
Tamil Nadu celebrates the harvest festival of Pongal today. The festival ushers in the Tamil month of Thai belived to bring prosperity. People worship the Sun God, prepare Pongal using freshly harvested rice. There is cheer among farmers in rural Tamil Nadu following good rains this season. Last year, the state witnessed severe drought. Today would also mark the beginning of the taming the bull sport Jallikattu under a strict watch as the tradition is also known for animal cruelty over the years. NDTV caught up with the the Mahadevans in Chennai on their Pongal celebrations.
