over 35 people in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district died after drinking illicit alcohol. Dozens more are being treated in hospital. The police have arrested a suspected bootlegger and detained two others. Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a probe by a retired High Court judge. The state government has suspended district police chief Samay Singh Meena and appointed Rajat Chaturvedi in his place. The Opposition in the state - the AIADMK and the BJP - has blamed the government for the lapse and the BJP has announced a state-wide protest.
