Air pollution is perhaps the most silent of killers we'll see in our lifetimes. The air we breathe has become toxic and it is time that we come up as a collective to raise concerns about this menace. The Supreme Court, in a recent observation, said that crackers should not be burnt this Diwali since the adverse impact that it has on the environment cannot be ignored anymore. As a consequence it put an immediate ban on the sale of crackers in the national capital region extending till the end of the month. Is this too small a step? Does the government need to do more? The air pollution in north India is also blamed on the smoke from stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana. How can the government take care of the needs of farmers and prevent them from indulging in this age-old practice? Can we give the future generation better air and a better quality of life? If the answer to that is yes, then we need to start now.
