The centre has imposed a ban on sale of cattle for slaughter under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. This has led to a series of protests in states of Kerala, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Nagaland where beef consumption is not deemed illegal. Can the centre impose such a ban? Does it undermine the federal structure of the country? In most states, there is already a ban on cow slaughter. So what necessitated the ban? Is it a diversionary tactic from issues like decline in jobs and a dip in GDP growth? Or is cow being used as an emotive issue for electoral purpose?
