There have been a spate of articles lately on the need for a new capital. Why does India need a new capital when it has New Delhi? Because Delhi is saturated in every way possible, say its critics. Its woes include over population, pollution, lack of infrastructure, a polluted river and the list goes on. Do we have the resources to build a capital from scratch or should the capital be "moved"? This brings us to a very contentious point. When one goes through a list of cities to move to, one realizes that the urban decay that infects Delhi is a common feature in cities across India. There isn't a major city in the country that hasn't been confronted by the ills of un-planned development and a lack of basic amenities. Is it time for urban planning to take centre stage?
