Social media is supposed to be a great equaliser - a democratic platform where everyone gets the same opportunity to opine or express their point of view. However, social media is also a place for instant justice - a place to vent and express and demand justice. Television studios and especially prime-time discussions are becoming shriller, attaining the characteristic of a slam-dunk shouting match where the verdict is pronounced and the guilty is named and shamed without investigation or fact checking. Are we living in an age of instant justice? Is the social media a force multiplier or a place where everyone tries to play the role of a judge, jury or executioner? What happens to those who are pronounced guilty and chastised? Is it time to look at the nature of social media and debates in Television studios?
