They are a bunch of unlikely heroes but they are fighting one of the most critical battles of our times, the battle against fake news. The vicious cycle of fake news, manufactured outrage and increased polarisation is now spilling out of social media into the real world in the form of violence, including most recently in Bengal's Basirhat where a morphed image of the Kaaba sparked off communal tension and then more fake images were used to fuel further tension. We explore how fake news and fake news websites are identified, and why fact checking has become one of the most important things media can do in the age of post-truth and alternative news.
