The revised bill to make instant Triple Talaq - the practice of Muslim men instantly divorcing their wives by uttering Talaq thrice - a punishable offence was passed by a voice vote in the Lok Sabha today after five-hour debate, followed by a walkout by the Congress and the AIADMK. The opposition parties, which are against criminalising the act, want a parliamentary committee to scrutinise the bill. The government said the Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment last year, had ruled instant Triple Talaq "unconstitutional" and "arbitrary". Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the bill should not be seen through the "prism of politics" but of humanity.
