Tussle Over Panchayat Polls In Bengal
Violence was reported from Chopda in Uttar Dinajpur district and Bhangar in South 24 Parganas in West Bengal on the final day of nominations for the panchayat polls in the state. Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has intervened, directing the State Election Commission to call in central forces within 48 hours to conduct panchayat polls and deploy them across the state. The power to conduct elections and decide on security deployment usually rests with the Election Commission.
