Uttarakhand is set to become the first Indian state in independent India with a Uniform Civil Code. It has been conceptualised as a set of laws that govern personal matters, including marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession, for all citizens, regardless of religion. As per sources, the bill also proposes to ban polygamy and bring in restrictions on live-in relationships. The big question is, will the Uttarakhand UCC bill be a template for the centre and other states?
