CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat member Brinda Karat reacted to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's "we have spent, we have spent and we have spent" remark during the Union Budget presentation. "Finance Minister said 'we have spent, we have spent, and we have spent' but the figures don't show that," You had a Rs 30 lakh crore budget allocation last time and if you look at the expenditure up till December, they have spent Rs 22 lakh crore. So, where is this 'spent, spent, spent'," said Ms Karat. "The main reason for the 9.5 per cent deficit is not 'spent, spent spent' but it is because of the huge shortfalls in revenue collections," she added.
