The Union Cabinet has officially approved Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, a significant initiative spanning 119 kilometres and costing ₹63,246 crore. Initially considered a state project to facilitate Japanese funding, the approval follows Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's recent appeal to Prime Minister Modi for the release of funds. The project aims to enhance connectivity across Chennai, linking the north, south, east, and west and has become a crucial issue in the recent Lok Sabha elections due to the non-release of funds by the central government.
