UPA's '5/20' Policy Didn't Make Sense: Aviation Minister To NDTV

Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju went a step closer to keep India's status as world's fastest growing aviation sector by clearing the new Civil Aviation Policy, which he expects will 'transform' the industry. His ministry scrapped the contentious '5/20' overseas flying rule for domestic airlines - the norm mandated that if a domestic airline wanted to operate internationally, it needs to have operated for five years and have a fleet strength of at least 20. In an exclusive interaction with NDTV, Mr Raju said that the scrapping of the policy was aimed to get more Indian players in the sky. He added that the UPA's '5/20' policy did not make any economic sense and that the first trans-Atlantic flight did not have any 'experience' to complete a successful journey.
