An unlikely lifeline has emerged in the form of the much-criticised UPA-era MNREGA scheme. PM Modi had earlier derided the MNREGA on the floor of the Parliament, saying that it is a "monument to the Congress' failure". However, in May, this year, over 2 crore have signed up for MNREGA - highest surge in eight years. Now, under Modi 2.0, the government has committed an additional Rs 40,000 crores to MNREGA.
