The BJP, more than the others, faces a threat from an unusual quarter: the so-called upper castes, long believed to be the party's vote bank. Protests have broken out across the Hindi heartland by these groups, in some places, along with underprivileged sections of the society against the recent strengthening of the SC/ST Act. The Act was modified by the Supreme Court which led to widespread protests by the scheduled caste community earlier this year. To fight those fires, the government then in its monsoon session, amended the act, re-introducing the earlier provisions effectively overturning the court's verdict. This has led to a upper caste backlash, they say the law will be used to wrongly target them. A backlash so intense that all political parties in Madhya Pradesh had to suspend their campaign. Some BJP leaders even joined the protests. Tonight, on Reality Check we discuss is this resentment the new threat to the BJP?
