Usha International Limited in partnership with the Government of Meghalaya and West Bengal Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe Finance Development Corporation has set up Silai Schools in the two states with an aim to equip women in rural areas with various techniques of stitching. The program in Meghalaya focusses on cloth bag making in order to provide alternatives to the plastic bags in the state. West Bengal government, on the other hand, has set up additional 29 Silai Schools across villages near Bongaon which is at around 130 kilometres away from Kolkata and only 20 kilometres from the current busiest international checkpoint border of India called Petrapole in India and Benapole in Bangladesh.
