With a new book 'God Save The Honorable Supreme Court' in the pipeline, eminent jurist and senior Supreme Court advocate Fali Nariman, in conversation with Shekhar Gupta on the show Walk the Talk, shares his opinion on a range of issues concerning the judiciary in the recent times. The veteran lawyer shared his concern over the press conference called in January by 4 senior Supreme Court judges to question the functioning of the institution. Mr Nariman believes that the press conference should have been avoided and that he has never come across anything so demeaning during his entire career. On the conflict between the judges and Chief Justice Dipak Misra, the jurist says that he is more concerned with the institution and not the situation of the four judges. While the Chief Justice is the master of the roster, the team has to act as one and both the sides could have handled the situation better, Mr Nariman states.
Sharing his opinion on the judges appointment issue, Mr Nariman says that Justice Gogoi, being the senior-most, should be appointed as the next Chief Justice and that anything else will be unconstitutional. On the controversial issue of Justice KM Joseph's appointment, the senior advocate says that it is foolish of the government to look into appointment of judges and it is also not for common folk to decide Justice Joseph's appointment.
