Nitin Gadkari's Surface Transport and Highways Ministry has come out with a white paper on the operations of the National Highway Authority of India. The white paper slams the UPA government for randomly awarding road construction contracts, or holding up projects because of a wrong understanding of court directions and environmental norms. It also suggests corrective action. Does this mean the highway construction in India will finally happen at the rate we need it to not only for economic growth but also for millions of commuters for whom travel on our national highways is nothing short of a nightmare? We debate on The Buck Stops Here.
