17 men from the Hindu Rashtra Sena, a radical outfit in Maharashtra, have been arrested so far in connection with the murder of a young IT professional in Pune last week. The killing is suspected to be related to the tension in the city over the derogatory depiction of Maratha king Shivaji and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray in pictures shared on Facebook. But the founder of the group, Dhananjay Desai, continues to roam free despite being, what the police say, a history-sheeter. He has, in the past, been charged with extortion under the Arms Act and causing communal disharmony. This is not the first time that images on social media have inflamed passions. While law and order is a state subject, many questions are being raised about whether the Centre should formulate a stronger response to this incident in order to send out a message of unity.
