Every government, no matter what the dispensation, makes grand promises of financial inclusion for the country's poor. Today, the NDA government launched its own version, the Jan Dhan Yojana. Its aim is to open basic bank accounts for every household in the country. We ask whether the scheme will be feasible to implement on the ground, given the realities of limited savings, small loans and financial illiteracy that abound.
