This week all headlines have focused on Justice Markandey Katju's revelations on how a certain judge was appointed to the Madras High Court despite concerns that were raised by the collegium because of political intervention. The government has now announced that it will speed up decisions on the appointment of judges. They are looking at setting up of a National Judicial Commission. But this all raises larger issues of the balance between the executive and judiciary as well - issues about judicial accountability, who will appoint the judges? Who will judge the judges?
