On May 4, 2017, the Bombay High Court convicted 5 Gujarat policemen and 2 doctors for tampering with evidence in the Bilkis Bano case.
On March 3, 2002, in Gujarat's Dahod district, 14 members of Bilkis' family were killed, including her two-year-old daughter Saleha, whose head was smashed on a rock. A pregnant Bilkis was gang raped and left for dead. She survived.
Bilkis Bano became a symbol of brutality witnessed during the Gujarat riots of 2002. For 15 years, Bilkis Bano, her family, her lawyers and a team of activists have fought hard for justice.
This is a rare case where the state's complicity in the Gujarat riots is established.
Five years ago, Bilkis Bano allowed us the most candid and intimate look at her courageous battle for justice and her attempts to rebuild her life.
