Why do Indian politicians shy away from televised debates?

With the election season in Uttar Pradesh on, politicians fly by chopper or brave the roads to go from rally to rally. But why do they ignore what their counterparts in the US seem to have perfected - televised public debates with their opponents where every issue is thrashed out.
