Sugar mills are closing down in Maharashtra. In Solapur district alone, 30 of the 37 sugar mills have been shut down. Sugar production is estimated to be lower by about 23 lakh tonnes compared to last year. The opposition has been aggressive about the loss of crops due to unseasonal rains, but there is no discussion on the shortage of sugarcane and why sugar mills are shutting down. While this has a direct impact on sugar production in the state and according to an estimate, the production of sugar has decreased by 23 lakh tonnes this time compared to last year.
