India's top biomedical scientist Dr Gagandeep Kang has said the Omicron variant of coronavirus, which was first detected in South Africa, says this variant has more mutations than any other variant seen in the past. "The fact that it has risen with all these mutations makes us wonder what we have missed on the path to this variant. Was this something that kept evolving in Africa, or we just didn't pick it up till it surfaced in South Africa and Botswana, or whether it has come from an immunocompromised person who was unable to suppress the replication of the virus... whatever it is, the mutations are several," Dr Kang said.
