Will There Be Chaos Without Criminal Defamation Laws?
The Supreme Court on Friday upheld criminal defamation laws in the country, which means those found guilty of criminal defamation can be jailed for up to two years. The top court has made it clear that the right to life includes the right to reputation. The judgment comes as a setback for the BJP's Subramanian Swamy, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, who are bitter political rivals united by a common cause. They all wanted the Supreme Court to remove criminal defamation laws, except that it didn't happen and they may now have to face a trial in the defamation cases that they face.
