On this day 16 years ago, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan lost his life fighting Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. He was leading an NSG team to clear the Taj Palace Hotel when he was fatally wounded. On 26 January 2009, he was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry honour.
