The couple skipped the usual royal wedding rites. Instead, in a news conference, Komuro simply stated: "I love Mako. I would like to spend my one life with the person I love."

Mako also turned down a traditional payment of $1.3 million typically made to royal women who leave the imperial family after marriage.

They planned to marry in 2018 but the wedding was postponed when a financial dispute involving Komuro's mother surfaced.

Komuro left Japan to study at Fordham University law school in the United States in 2018 only to return in September this year.

Prince Akishino, Mako's father, said it would be impossible to hold an engagement ceremony until the financial dispute was resolved.
