Ashraf Ghani, Afghan President, Flees

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has reportedly left the country after the Taliban entered Kabul.

Mr Ghani is an anthropologist by education and has taught the subject at the University of Columbia and Johns Hopkins University before entering politics.

In 1991, Mr Ghani joined World Bank as lead anthropologist. He also served as an advisor to the UN Secretary-General's special envoy to Afghanistan in 2001.

On February 1, 2002, Mr Ghani became Chief Advisor to Interim President Hamid Karzai.

During his term as Finance Minister in 2002, he introduced a new currency and set up a tax system.

On May 7, 2009, he registered as a candidate for 2009 Afghan presidential election. He got only 3% of the votes.
