The Duchess of Cornwall, who married Prince Charles - Elizabeth's eldest son and heir - in 2005, has fought hard for British approval.

Charles and Camilla were romantically involved during the Prince's marriage to Diana, the Princess of Wales, called "Queen Of Hearts" by her admirers.

Diana famously complained in a bombshell interview that "there were three of us in this marriage"– a reference to Charles and Camilla's affair.

The British tabloids reviled Camilla, calling her the homewrecker who shattered Britain's fairytale royal love story, even terming her the most hated woman in Britain.

Camilla was blamed by many for Charles and Princess Diana's divorce in 1996, a year before Diana died in a car crash.

After Diana's death, Charles and Camilla were free to revive their decades-old romance. They married in 2005. Camilla's title remained ambiguous for years.

Through the years, Camilla has carved out a role for herself, coming into her own, campaigning to raise awareness on osteoporosis.

Responding to the announcement, Prince Charles said he and Camilla were "deeply conscious of the honor" of the queen's wish.
