Vaccinating People With Disabilities
To ensure vaccination of the people with disabilities, the Central government has called on states to increase access by bringing vaccination services closer to the community and nearer to homes.

Government has released guidance notes for the states proposing the strategy for Near to Home COVID Vaccination Centres (NHCVC) for people with disabilities as well as the elderly.

The strategy follows a community-based approach where sessions can be conducted in non-health facility based settings and are nearer to home, like in a community centre, RWA centre/office, panchayat ghar, school buildings, old age homes and so on.

Based on the learnings from previous Routine Immunisation, listing of Elderly and people with disabilities will have to be prepared and Near to Home Vaccination Centres can be organised to provide COVID-19 vaccines to a defined population.

These NHCVC are organised specially for this target population only, while vaccination for all other age groups will continue at the existing COVID Vaccination Centres.

As per the guidelines, based on the cohort of this eligible population of elderly & people with disabilities, District Task Force (DTF) or Urban Task Force (UTF) will decide the location of NHCVC to maximise the reach of vaccination to the target population, reduce vaccine wastage along with causing minimal impact on the existing health services.

Panchayat, local Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Resident Welfare Associations, Urban Local Bodies are responsible for supporting the line listing process and organisation of session, including steps to avoid overcrowding at session sites.

Tamil Nadu's Pudukottai district has achieved 100% coverage in vaccinating people with disabilities for COVID-19 vaccine. The milestone was achieved after the Differently Abled Welfare Department conducted door-to-door vaccination for the differently abled.
