Many animals have adapted impressive underwater vision to help them hunt, navigate, or survive in aquatic environments. Here are 10 such animals

1. Dolphins have excellent underwater vision, both in and out of water. Their eyes are adapted to low light conditions, enabling them to see clearly in murky or deep waters

2. Sharks have well-adapted eyes with a mirror-like layer behind the retina which allows them to see in dimly lit waters, such as the deep sea

3. Octopuses have large, highly sensitive eyes that can detect polarised light and subtle changes in brightness. Their excellent vision helps them hunt and navigate in the dark ocean depths

4. Seals have eyes designed for both underwater and surface vision. Their large, round lenses and a specialised membrane help them focus and see clearly underwater, even in dim light

5. Penguins' eyes are adapted to see clearly underwater, with a flatter cornea and highly developed retina that give them excellent underwater vision, allowing them to catch fast-moving fish

6. Mantis Shrimp have some of the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, capable of detecting polarised light and seeing a vast range of colours, including ultraviolet

7. Frogfish have binocular vision, allowing them to judge distances very well underwater. Their eyes are adapted to track fast-moving prey with remarkable precision in murky waters

8. Cuttlefish can see polarised light and have large pupils that adjust to different light levels underwater. This ability gives them great sensitivity to changes in light and helps with camouflage and hunting

9. Sea turtles have adapted to see well in the blue and green light of the ocean. Their eyes are particularly sensitive to these colours, helping them navigate through water and find food

10. Eels especially those living in deep waters, have highly adapted eyes for low-light environments. Some species can see in extremely dark conditions, making them skilled nocturnal hunters
