The study of Earth's atmosphere from high altitudes began in earnest after World War II

On October 24, 1946, a significant milestone in space exploration was achieved

In 1946, German V-2 rocket, carrying a 35mm motion picture camera captured the first ever picture of earth

However, after reaching a maximum altitude of 65 miles, the camera fell back to Earth and was destroyed upon impact, but the film survived

In 1947, scientists in New Mexico pieced together these first images of Earth taken by a camera on a V-2 rocket

Before 1946, the highest pictures ever taken of the Earth's surface were from the Explorer II balloon

The V-2 cameras reached more than five times that altitude, where they clearly showed the planet set against the blackness of space

Scientists quickly got better at taking Earth's picture

Here's a still frame from about 6 months later, taken from V-2 #21, launched on March 7, 1947
