Regardless of age, gender or race, everyone should use sun protection factor (SPF) to protect their skin

SPF, or sun protection factor, is a measure of how well sunscreen protects our skin from the sun's rays, specifically its UVB rays

The numbers associated with SPF are meant to indicate to the amount of time you can be in the sun while wearing that formula and avoid burning

Ideally, with SPF 30 it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you weren't wearing sunscreen. An SPF of 50 allows about 2 percent of those rays through

While buying a sunscreen, one should also look for products with broad-spectrum, which protects against both UVA (aging rays) and UVB rays

Experts suggest choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher on your face

As a general rule of thumb, one should use enough sunscreen to cover the entire surface area of the face. It is recommended to use 2 milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin

If you're spending time in the sun, you should use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 that you like, applied liberally, every two hours

For spray sunscreens, experts say to apply "until an even sheen appears on the skin"

Wearing sunscreen is crucial as it decreases risk of skin cancer, prevents premature skin aging, reduces risk of sunburn and prevents skin discolouration
