LinkedIn has over 1 billion members worldwide, making it the largest professional networking platform in the world

The platform also recommends a number of steps to make sure your profile stands out from the pack

But LinkedIn's 'open to work' symbol is the biggest red flag, according to former Google recruiter Nolan Church

Mr Church said the poster signals a candidate's desperation to hiring managers

"Recruiting is like dating. You have to make the other side feel like you're exclusive," he said at a podcast

Mr Church said recruiters believe the best people are not looking for jobs, and that you have to pull them out

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't apply for jobs. He said don't signal it so openly on LinkedIn

"You have to create desire. For better or worse, it's just how humans are wired," said Mr Church

Other experts are, however, divided on this view. Even LinkedIn says 33 million users are currently using the feature

Angelina Darrisaw, CEO of C-Suite, said the banner helps small companies that can't access LinkedIn's recruiter tools
