The scheme was first announced by the federal government in early 2022 which delegated the rule framing to a department. The rules are now ready

As per Forbes, the law allows people without an EU passport (or any other visa) to legally work in the country long-term

But the new rules do not make it easy to get an Italian digital nomad visa, the outlet further said

Anyone looking to apply must be "highly-skilled", which according to Italian government is someone who is highly proficient with technology

The regulations refer to freelancers as "digital nomads" whereas they refer to employees as "remote workers"

The applicants must have a university or college degree (minimum 3 years), an accredited professional license, or superior professional experience

There is also a financial barrier to holding this visa, related to the cost of Italian healthcare

Applicants must be a freelancer or on a company payroll and their annual salary must be at least 28,000 euros (just above $30,000)

However, the law doesn't stipulate that the money has to come from the remote work, it can be income from any source

You also need proof of healthcare cover in the country. Family members can come too, but at the discretion of the local police

Anyone convicted of a criminal offence in the past five years will be automatically disqualified
