The research body strictly advised against over-consuming ultra-processed foods which include bread, butter, and cheese

All of these are packed with salt, sugar, fats, preservatives that change the composition of your gut microbes

They also contain additives like artificial colours, flavours or stabilizers to enhance the appearance, texture, taste, or durability of food

ICMR classified commercially-made bread, breakfast cereals, refined flour, cakes, chips, fries, jams, mayonnaise and and even cooking oils as ultra-processed

Peanut butter, soy chunks, tofu, commercially-made cheese, butter, paneer with additives, refined sugars, salt and spices are also in this category

Other examples are plant-based meats, refined flours of cereals, millets and legumes, energy drinks, health drinks added to milk, beverages and fruit juices

These ultra-processed foods tend to be excessively high in fats and unusually low in fibres and essential nutrients

Consuming such foods increase the risk of major heart and lung conditions, cancer, mental health disorders, and other negative health outcomes
