Born on September 26, 1932, in undivided Punjab, Manmohan Singh moved to Amritsar during the Partition. A good student, he studied under streetlights as his home of was too noisy.

In 1957, he completed his Economics Tripos from Cambridge University. In 1962 he did a DPhil in Economics from Oxford University

He joined the government as Economic Adviser in 1971, and subsequently became the Chief Economic Adviser in the finance ministry in 1972

From 1977-1980, he served as Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs in the finance ministry. From 1982-85, he served as Governor, Reserve Bank of India

In 1985, he was appointed as deputy chairman, Planning Commission, and subsequently served as Advisor to the Prime Minister on Economic Affairs in 1990-91
