A quaint village in Maharashtra, located just 60 km from Pune, has become renowned for being a peacock sanctuary

Morachi Chincholi, when translated from Marathi means 'Tamarind trees for peacocks'

Over 2,000 peacocks live in harmony, in this village with a population of roughly 2,000 people

The national bird enjoys a privileged status in the village, and roams freely as no one dares capture it

The villagers assert that the peacocks have been cared, looked after and fed for the past several generations

The birds are often spotted atop trees or in the fields, and they are quite familiar with the village folk

The villagers have also taken active steps to protect and conserve the peacock population in their area

They have planted trees and shrubs that peacocks can use for food and shelter, and formed community groups to protect peacocks

No teasing or disrespect towards them is tolerated. Areas where peacocks are likely to be hunted have been fenced off

It is believed that the peafowls help the villagers by eating harmful crop insects and keeping snakes away from the village
