In 1962, Flying Tiger Flight 739 (N6921C) disappeared without a trace with 96 soldiers, 11 crew members onboard during the Vietnam War

The aircraft, which had been chartered by the US Army, was transporting the soldiers from California to Vietnam's Saigon as part of a secret mission

The flight departed Travis Air Force Base on March 14, 1962. However, it went missing after a refueling stop in Guam and never arrived at its next stop

Within a few months of the plane's disappearance, all 107 passengers were declared dead

No trace of the plane or its passengers were ever found, despite the largest peacetime air-and-sea rescue mission that followed

There were speculations that the aircraft had been hijacked or sabotaged, but no one found any evidence to support this theory

The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) determined that Flight 739 probably exploded in-flight, though an exact cause could not be determined

For surviving family, the most popular theory has always been that the men were part of a secret military operation gone awry

In late 2020, surviving family members constructed a monument in South Portland, Maine, honoring the servicemen of Flight 739
