The process to make Palitana a veg-only town began in 1999 when Jain monks launched a campaign to ban the sale and consumption of non-veg food within the city

In 2014, some 200 of these monks went on a hunger strike, seeking the closure of around 250 butcher shops in the area

To respect the sentiments of the Jain community, the government is said to have banned the sale of non-veg food

On November 4, 1999, the administration issued a formal order prohibiting the sale and consumption of non-veg food in and around the Shatrunjaya hill

The order also banned animal slaughter within this sacred area
