Popcorn lung, or bronchiolitis obliterans, is a rare, irreversible lung disease where the smallest airways (bronchioles) become scarred and narrowed, restricting airflow

It causes coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and fatigue, often resembling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

The term came about because workers in popcorn factories developed this condition after being exposed to diacetyl, a buttery-flavored chemical used in microwave popcorn

Diacetyl was safe to eat but dangerous to inhale in large amounts. Inhaling diacetyl (or similar chemicals like 2,3-pentanedione) can damage lung tissue over time

While diacetyl is no longer used in popcorn, bronchiolitis obliterans can also be caused by inhaling other harmful substances, including those found in e-cigarettes

When e-liquids with diacetyl are inhaled, the chemical can reach the lungs and potentially cause damage to the small airways over time, similar to what happened in popcorn factories
