The thought of working out make some people tense. Are you one of them? This news is for you

Scientists at Washington University have developed a medicine that could offer the same benefits as exercise

The medicine can mimic the physical boost of a workout and potentially treat 'couch potato' conditions

Named SLU-PP-332, it can also stave off conditions like dementia, heart failure and declining kidney function

Researchers tested the new drug compound on rodents and it appeared to mimic the physical benefits of exercise

The animals also showed improved endurance running on a rodent treadmill

Bahaa Elgendy, PhD, told 'Fortune' that his team spent about a decade developing the compound

It activates a group of specialised proteins, called estrogen-related receptors, that are triggered by exercise

The pills also appear to counter damaging brain processes that occur in patients with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia

People will be able to take the exercise-mimicking pill once a day
