The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) has released the list of top 10 smartest cities in the world

According to IMD, a smart city is defined as an “urban setting that applies technology to enhance benefits and diminish the shortcomings of urbanisation for its citizens”

Here are the top 10 smart cities, according to the 2024 Smart City Index

Zurich in Switzerland topped the list this year by doing particularly well in public transport, basic sanitation, education, and public safety

Oslo in Norway bagged the second spot on the list by developing initiatives that cater to their citizens' overall quality of life

Canberra in Australia ranked third in the index. It scored particularly well for its low air pollution, its number of green spaces and a high sense of inclusion among minority citizens

Geneva, Switzerland, ranked fourth in the Smart City Index with perfect scores in healthcare and education

Singapore ranked fifth this year thanks to high scores in safety, high connectivity, online reporting and a seamless documenting process

Ranking sixth on the list is Copenhagen, Denmark, thanks to its success in a number of sustainable development initiatives

Another Swiss city mentioned on the list is Lausanne. This small city ranked 7th in the index even though its population sits at just around 150,000

London ranked eighth in the index this year thanks to its ease of online services, including booking transportation and easy-to-access WiFi

Helsinki ranked ninth this year by doing well in basic sanitation, education, and public safety

Abu Dhabi ranked 10th in the index. The city scored extremely well for its ease of transportation and online booking, high sanitation and digital skills
