UNESCO Designates 11 New Biosphere Reserves: Full List

UNESCO recently approved the designation of 11 new biosphere reserves in 11 countries. Notably, Biosphere reserves are designated areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems

Covering a combined area of 37,400 km², roughly the size of the Netherlands, these additions bring the total number of biosphere reserves to 759 across 136 countries

1. Situated in the northeastern part of Belgium and the southeastern part of the Netherlands, the Kempen-Broek Transboundary Biosphere Reserve covers a mosaic of wetlands, heathlands and forests

2. The Darien Norte Chocoano Biosphere Reserve is located in Colombia's Darien region, known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems

3. The Madre de las Aguas Biosphere Reserve is situated in the central part of the Dominican Republic, encompassing mountainous areas within the Cordillera Central range

4. The Niumi Biosphere Reserve, situated in the northwest region of Gambia, encompasses a diverse range of habitats including mangrove forests, wetlands, savannas, and coastal areas

5. Colli Euganei Biosphere Reserve in northeastern Italy features 81 volcanic hills and is known for its thermal waters and rich biodiversity

6. Spanning across northeastern Italy and northwestern Slovenia, the Julian Alps Transboundary Biosphere Reserve covers a diverse landscape of rugged mountains, alpine meadows, lakes, and forests

7. Situated in the Great Lakes Depression of western Mongolia, the Khar Us Lake Biosphere Reserve includes Khar Us Lake and its surrounding wetlands

8. yApayaos Biosphere Reserve in Philippines spans 3,960 km² and features rugged terrain and diverse ecosystems

10: The Val d'Aran Biosphere Reserve in the northeastern part of Spain, covers a mountainous area within the Pyrenees, characterized by rugged landscapes, alpine meadows, forests, and glacial lakes

11. The Irati Biosphere Reserve is located in northern Spain, and includes diverse ecosystems such as temperate deciduous forests as well as alpine meadows, rivers, and wetlands
